Eighth Annual CISS Millennium Conference: Global Conflict, Cooperation and Integration

June 13 – 15, 2008
Paris, France

The contemporary international system is confronted with unusual and unparalleled challenges and opportunities. The response of individuals, groups, and governments toward meeting these challenges has often been marked by innovation and cooperation. This conference proposes to consider the scope and nature of various traditional interstate and internal conflicts, as well as such challenges to the international community as: clashing ideological and religious perspectives, global terrorism, population pressures and the scarcity of key resources, environmental degradation, and the spread of disease.

The conference will also examine and assess the responses by the members of the international community. While many of these responses have been framed within the traditional Westphalian system, many cooperative and innovative initiatives appear to challenge and transcend the state system. Hence, the conference will address the future direction of the international system itself. How will the global community of the 21st century be organized and will it effectively address the challenges that confront it, as well as successfully avail itself to unprecedented opportunities for equitable and sustainable global development?

The Eighth International CISS Millennium conference hopes to enhance our collective understanding and appreciation for both the realities and the promise of the 21st century. In addition it hopes to explore the various ways that mankind can cooperate to successfully create a safer, more prosperous, and more equitable world, while simultaneously celebrating the rich and diverse heritage of all peoples.
